Irony
There are many uses of irony used throughout the novel;
- Situational Irony - When Christopher is taking his A level math test after not sleeping, eating, or studying for a while, the reader would naturally be left to believe that Christopher might have failed the test. However, Christopher does very well on the test, receiving an A level, despite the lack of essential things.
- Situational Irony - When Christopher is knocked out by his father, the reader is lead to believe that they would be mad at each other after, and perhaps try something extreme. However, after he regains consciousness, his father apologizes, and goes to make him some food.
- Dramatic Irony - While Christopher leaves the house, Ed is looking around frantically trying to find him, yet the reader knows that Christopher is hiding from him, and that Ed is unaware of Christopher's plans of going to London to stay with his mother.
